Finding the right type of training for your business

You have identified the need for business training, but what kind will work best for you? There are several different methods of training available, which are outlined in the table below. In some cases it’s possible that more than one option may be suitable for your business.

2.3.1 Type of Training 2.3.2 Definition 2.3.3 Benefit
Coaching and Mentoring Using existing experienced employees to support staff at all levels, improving their knowledge or performance in their role, or supporting employees as they take on a new or more senior role. Using in-house resources can
help to build self-esteem and
confidence and adds an
underlying strength to the
business.
Distance Learning Correspondence courses. Students can manage their
study time to fit in with their
work and lifestyle. Many
courses are related to work
and the employer begins to benefit as the student
progresses through the course.
e-learning Learning via the Internet. Training can be broken down
into small convenient sessions, thereby minimising disruption to the working day and allowing employees to learn at home.
In-house training Using existing staff to run courses or buying in a provider. Learning on your own premises overcomes problems with transport and encourages employees to participate as part of their working day.
